Tiny Pooch Training

Chocolate Truth eBook
Exactly why dog lovers have this preconceived notion that small breed dogs are more difficult to discipline than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should not be problematic.

Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy of any other size. Whilst training any puppy will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, most all other features remain the same, and the technique to training the dog should remain the same, irrespective its size.

With that said, I will make an exception here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may pose issues in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.

If a small breed pup is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a smallish breed puppy cannot be bathroom trained or poses difficulties in being crate trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this situation. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Tiny dogs are loved because they are sweet, they are like toys. Owners get pleasure from having their pet sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the problem starts. The natural aggressive characteristic of the canine, is to take ownership over its domain, its food, even its owner; all canines strive to be the alpha dog.

It is the ruthless streak in the canine animal that causes it to jump on to the lap of its master, specially when there are a number of persons gathered in the room.

This is a outright act of ruthlessness. Instead of admonishing the animal, every owner bar none, would cuddle the puppy, although it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, developing the aggressive streak in the puppy. In this way the owner has accepted the dog's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a much bigger dog is another blatant act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is viewed as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is big. Most owners pet and pat the dog instead of scolding it, when it demonstrates this aggression towards a larger dog.

The above are but instances as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is different or difficult.

Bathroom Training

Owners tend to carry their small puppies around no matter where they are, even while they are at home and that makes it very difficult to bathroom train them

It comes natural to the owners of small dogs to carry the animal to the spot where the dog should go to the bathroom and then carry it back into the house.

It is this routine of carrying the pup to its appointed toilet area that is the cause of all dilemmas. In addition, as the pup is normally carried around all the time it has no way of it suggesting to or alerting the owner that it has to poop.

Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be taken to their pooping area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their tiny breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of dog training, and so it can be, even in Small Dog Training.
