The rocky mountain above the junction of two powerful European streams Danube and Sava was well suited for constructing the city. Over the decades, the city changed loads of citizens and lords, its visual appeal and size, but never its dominant position. Its buildings would whiten to newcomers from the river so it definitely have received the name Beograd (Serbian translation: bright city). The sightseer who sailed underneath the walls of Belgrade from distant lands would be amazed by its firm citadel, tower size and fortress symmetry at the top of the mountain. Driven by the river wind, gliding right next to the city, new buildings, streets and squares, boat would at some point find its rest in one of the city's shipping ports. And the visitor which we call tourist today, could see in the ship diary that the year is 1403, the early beginning of the XV millennium. That year, for the first time, Belgrade become a capital of Serbia. At that time despot Stefan, the son of prince Lazar, was the lord of Serbia. Looking for a region to make Serbia's capital on the far north, employing skilled diplomatic negotiations he managed to get Belgrade from the Hungarians. It took him only 23 years to turn a wholly devastated and deserted area into a new and glowing city. In Charter issued in the city, despot Stefan wrote: I have found the most beautiful place since the time immemorial, the great city of Belgrade that is by circumstance demolished and deserted. I raised it and committed to Holy Virgin.
As knowledgeable and refined man, author of the most beautiful lines of old Serbian literature and a devoted reader, Despot Stefan primarily wanted to make Belgrade an economic, cultural and religious center of the country.
With many significant economical benefits published in the Charter, which had a golden stamp with the city's picture, Despot Stefan has engaged many small businesses, craftsmen and other residents, from his and other countries. Wishing to give safe stay to all city's newcomers, despot Stefan initially renewed the old fortifications, protective towers and walls.
Stefan then established "The Upper town" and a palace complex as an independent entity secured by the mighty tower, called Nebojsa, and the entrance door with a movable bridge. There he lived with his family members and other nobles.
Still, the city life was conducted in the lower city, where the velocity of trade and craft through Despot's reductions was so drastic that the city increased tenfold. Aside from the Serbian merchants, Belgrade was largely inhabited and traveled by the Dubrovnik citizens and the Hungarians, and a smaller number of the French, the Italian, the Venetians and others. In today's terms, it can be came to the conclusion that among other aspects, Belgrade was very well developed tourist town where people would go shopping. Belgrade marketplace offering was rich and mixed. Most exported goods were ore, lead, copper, mercury and precious metals, gold and silver. Leather, wax and cheese followed.
