As a wedding day and event planner, I am subject to more than my fair share of indignation and rage. You see, til people plan their first wedding day, they never think about how much weddings cost. They wish to have low-cost weddings, yet they also want to have all of the glitz & glamor. The problem is that, even if you buy reasonably priced bridal dresses, inexpensive wedding day cakes, cheap bridesmaid dresses, and all the rest, it will still add up to lots of money. The bottom line is that, if you want to have that cost effective wedding day, you need to be willing to make sacrifices.
I'm not saying that having cost-effective weddings is impossible. If you're willing to have a small wedding ceremony with just a few of your very closest friends there, you can do it for quite a rational price. You can make it special by incorporating touches like top wedding songs. The problem is that, if having cost-effective weddings is your intention, you have to plan everything around it. That means that you have to have a small guest list, make reservations at some reasonably priced place, have some low-cost wedding day dress, rent a tuxedo for the groom, & play top wedding songs on a less costly sound system, generally scrimp & save at every opportunity. Some of my customers have actually taken their own wedding photographs to save on the cost of hiring a wedding photographer!
The bottom line is that the most reasonably priced weddings are done in a judge's chambers. Everything else which you do costs extra money. Some families go in to debt for years because of what they spend on holding a grand, elaborate wedding. To me, it looks like a pity. When I meet customers who truly wish to have low-cost weddings, I tell them to have them in the back-yard. That way, they can save on wedding reservations - and play your top wedding songs on a boombox, if necessary! If they are really ambitious, they can even cater it them-selves. If there are going to be more than 30 people there, however, this is generally not a very good idea.
I suppose that it all depends on what you expect from your wedding. When I first got married, all I desired was some simple ceremony to bestow my love to my wife. If this is all that you wish as well, it is going to be very easy for you to plan some cost-effective wedding. If, on the other hand, you want to have an extravagant party with all of your friends and family, you will have to pay for it.
