Frank and Linda have been dating for seven-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same European history class at a small, rural, private liberal arts college located in the far Western part of the United States. While they were only good friends at first, they finally began dating when they were in their second year of college.
Since both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the testing stage when they first started to date. As the time proceeded, however, they began to go to more keg parties, football bashes, happy hours, and sorority and fraternity parties. As a consequence, they gradually began to drink more as time passed by.
After they graduated, they both got jobs in a relatively small city located approximately ninety-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they decided to move in with one another.
With any significant transformation in a person's life there is often something that prompts the particular modification in question. For Frank and Linda the notion of having children and buying a new house was this "trigger." To put it simply, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to reflect on their hazardous and irresponsible drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their health. All of these questions without a doubt pointed to the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to realize that they couldn't continue their hazardous and abusive drinking if their dreams, hopes, and aspirations were to be realized.
Once they came to this conclusion, they told their drinking pals about their their marital plans, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this time forward so that they could start to realize their future goals, dreams, and aspirations.
Surprisingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been recalculating their lives and concluded that their life-styles were totally focused on drinking. They also felt that they would have to change drastically if they were to become more adult-like and manifest more concern for their health, their careers, and for their goals in the next five or ten years.
After their conversation with their friends about their plans, dreams, and hopes, Linda and Frank basically started to have more significant relationships with all of their pals. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their irresponsible drinking and their short and long-term goals, plans, and aspirations.
