Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Coping Skills And Hazardous Drinking, And The Need For Coping Skills Training

Chocolate Truth eBook
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Many alcohol dependency consultants claim that liquor, wine, and beer ads generated by the media are a significant by the media are an important reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction specialists declare that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other substance abuse specialists think that more than a few of our teens get involved in injurious drinking because of the increased apprehension that they undergo.

From a somewhat different vantage point, due to the fact that both parents in quite a few families are employed, the lack of parental guidance indubitably has to play a significant role in the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse. And last of all, various alcohol addiction consultants declare that the escalation of teen alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our laissez-faire society.

One facet of youth alcohol abuse that seems to be under reported in the substance abuse research results, in contrast, is the lack of educational courses that teach teens how to upgrade their coping skills so that their hazardous and careless drinking behavior is significantly lessened or gotten rid of. Stated more precisely, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and abusive and unhealthy drinking.

Basically, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a valid affirmation, why isn't coping skills training a major part of the educational curriculum in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?

Let us create a scenario for the purpose of explanation. Let us imagine a society in which students are taught how to achieve sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets stressful, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative manner, contrary to others who fail to execute their coping skills.

Stated differently, students who show evidence of first-class coping skills will be more able to think proactively and show signs of quality decision making as opposed to teens do not possess top quality coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if adolescents not only received extraordinary coping skills training but also got a top quality education that stressed the long term and short term negative outcomes associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is affirmed, would help teens stay away from the noticeable allure of adolescent drinking and, accordingly, would substantially diminish the alcohol abuse shown by teens in our country.

There are evidently scores of valid reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a destructive manner. Such a complicated predicament demands a comprehensive and more applicable response by our students, parents, politicians, and educators so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and accountable manner rather than gravitating to alcohol abuse to solve their difficulties.
