Stephen was a seventeen year old high school junior who was manifesting numerous alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to come back to school.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school suspension to his Mother and Father. His Mom and Dad were "relatively conservative" and told Stephen that getting kicked out of school was not a viable educational option. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his legs that could probably hinder his educational achievement for the remainder of his adult life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were quite dissatisfied that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his peers in the second.
It was clear that his Mother and Father were completely in agreement with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his discussion with his parents, Stephen eventually agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his first period class.
When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of apprehension by the school administrators.
Quite truthfully, Stephen was not sure why the principal informed him that he had to see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? Due to the fact that almost all of his peers drink about as much as he does, primarily, drinking shouldn't be such a big thing. Stated more explicitly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to short-circuit his ability to conduct himself like an accountable young man. As put into words by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your classmates drink wine, wine coolers, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's right for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was well prepared for her conference with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that summarized different drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied especially to teenagers.
After Miss Pender verbalized the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender made known to Stephen was a realization for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the short term and the long term consequences of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, but she also made the effort to support what she was saying with alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to everybody in general, and principally to underage drinkers.
Certainly, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen immediately understood why he should not be engaging in excessive and hazardous drinking with or without his buddies any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
