Andy was a ninth grader who usually seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and typically wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The basic holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore legally allowed to operate a car and to drink alcohol.
Andy, then again, had a difficult time accepting the truth that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, however, Andy often drank with his high school friends after school, particularly on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older guy friends. One of his guy friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After buying some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of the guys went to a park and drank for about two hours.
After drinking around nine bottles of beer, Andy started to feel woozy and then threw up. When he became unconscious on the baseball field, one of his guy friends called 911 for help. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his pals went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.
After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite shocked to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had around five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he explained this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare professional told Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour time frame could in reality be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The physician further conveyed how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this takes place, an individual can expire.
This was the first sign to Andy that he was drinking in a risky manner and that there is a price tag for such actions. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost lost his life from an alcohol overdose the night before.
The healthcare professional also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was safe and sound and told the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol therapy.
While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous week at school.
At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost passed away, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more closely in class and applied what he had learned to his life.
Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to a topic that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
